Mayor Newsom released a budget that will terminate critical health and human services, while pumping up salaries for police by 25% and adding many new high paid patronage positions into his own administration. We need the board to stand up and do the right thing - restore the devastating cuts some highlights of the devastating impact of the budget include:

1) Closure of Ella Hill Hutch shelter serving up to 100 people every night in the western addition.

2) Closure of caduceus outreach services, a mental health treatment and wrap around support program for severely disabled homeless adults with co-existing addictive disorders.

3) Close tenderloin health homeless drop-in serving 300 poor people daily

4) Almost total elimination (66% cut) of sro families united program for families with dependent children living in hotels.

5) Cut of 22% of residential substance abuse and mental health treatment programs budgets.

A. Removal of support from Conard supportive housing program for severe psychiatric disabilities.

B. Closure of Cortland acute diversion unit for individuals in psychiatric crisis.

C. Loss of 12 out of 24 community based medically supported detox beds

6) Cut of 30% to all outpatient substance abuse and mental health treatment

7) Closure of two large shetlers during daytime hours -episcopal/next door

8) Almost total elimination of stop treatment program.

9) 1,600 people losing mental health treatment through private provider network.

"REBELS ROCK ON FOR IRAQI REFUGEES" AT EL BALAZO FRIDAY JUNE 13TH

"Rebels Rock On For Iraqi Refugees", a collaborative effort by Mission district activists will kick off Friday, June 13th at El Balazo Gallery 2183 Mission Street at 17th starting at 8 PM.

On hand to rock on will be punk troubadour and event-instigator Tommy Strange (solo electric set); Beltaine's Fire, a fusion of Celtic folk music and hip-hop (myspace.com.beltainesfire); and The Countless Others (myspace.com.thecountlessothers), described by Strange as "a manic charged fuzz garage punk band." Also on stage will be veteran Mexico City-Mission district poet, activist, and globetrotting troublemaker John Ross who traveled to Baghdad in 2003 as a human shield to interpose his body between the bombs of Bush and the Iraqi people.

All proceeds from "Rebels Rock On For Iraqi Refugees" will be donated to the Collateral Repair Project, a grassroots organization that seeks to repair some of the damage inflicted upon the Iraqi people by George Bush's illegal war. The Collateral Repair Project delivers person-to-person material aid to damaged populations both in Iraq and amongst the nearly 1,000,000 refugees who have been forced into Jordan. In the past few months, ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) has been stepping up workplace raids in the Bay Area and around the country - imprisoning and deporting thousands of men and women for the “crime” of working to support their families. Unions are faced with the challenge of addressing members’ questions and fears, helping them stand up for each other effectively, and building a political response that can end these attacks on working people.

This workshop will address:

• Training workers to assert their rights when dealing with immigration agents
• Preparing shop stewards and leaders to support other workers during a raid
• Responding to raids: running safe and effective rapid response protests,accessing legal and social services, advocating for detained workers.

In this program, people from binational associations, students, and
others involved in families and communities that stretch across the border
will share projects designed to strengthen and sustain trans-border
communities. We invite you to come and share your ideas about the
challenges and possibilities for sustaining these ties into the next
generation. Beatriz Leyva-Cutler, executive director of BAHIA, will
moderate the discussion.

Projects to be presented include:

-a bilingual children's book, written and illustrated by three Chican
teens from Oakland, inspired by visits to their home communities in
Mexico and their own bicultural experience. (Patricia Sánchez, Tomasa Dueñas

-an innovative cross-border summer program that connects teens from

Fundraiser for Pro-Immigrant US-Mexico Border Trip

A fundraising dinner and film, sponsored by the Task Force on the Americas, will be held on Friday, March 28, to help finance a five-member Marin delegation going to investigate conditions at the US-Mexico border. The event will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 9 Ross Valley Drive, San Rafael. The venue is wheelchair accessible.

Dinner is at 6 PM followed by remarks from community members and the showing of the documentary Morristown. This film tells how US workers are faced with the costs of NAFTA and globalization. Their factory is closed down and shipped to Mexico; but instead of folding up, the workers from eastern Tennessee join with Mexican workers to unionize and fight for they rights.

Two of the trip's delegates are Task Force board members, and all five are members of the Marin Immigrant Rights Coalition. For the last two months the team has been videotaping interviews with Canal-area immigrants who explain their reasons for coming to the U.S. and the struggles they continue to face.

A Night of Musical Resistance

A night which features various musical groups and one poet, with different artistic styles and influences, yet joined by one universal cause and intention… The Brass Liberation Orchestra plays in the streets of the Bay Area, carrying their instruments as weapons, while waging social warfare upon various events, protests, parades, celebrations and ceremonies with their renditions of worker inspired anthems… Bolivar Vive! plays a blend of ska, reggae, punk, and other worldly influences, inspired by the acts of various international revolutionary movements, while the group Aztlan Underground from Los Angeles mixes elements of heavy rock, hip hop, pre-Colombian, and indigenous rhythms, with lyrics that are both intelligent and defiant… The solo and unaccompanied poet for the evening is Vallejo's Rupert Estanislao, who moonlights as vocalist for the hardcore group Eskapo, spitting powerful lyrics in both English and Tagalog, Rupert speaks from the heart… And finally, closing the evening is the bilingual punk quintet La Plebe from San Francisco, who play fast and aggressive punk with horns, projecting a sincere sound that has found it's home somewhere between the local BART station, the neighborhood cantina, and the international concert hall…

A percentage of the door will be donated to the organization California Prison Focus (www.prison.org), to help in their fight for human rights and reform within the California prison system… More information about their work will be available the night of the event, as representatives will be present to answer any questions...

On Thanksgiving Day, a woman and her family were terrorized by several San Francisco Police officers. At the time, the woman was taking a shower while her children were downstairs. The police entered her home, terrorized her children, assaulter and arrested one of her family members. When she came out of the shower to find out what was happening, the police held her, in front of her children, with no clothes on.
This woman is not alone. Dozens of families in this community and others are being terrorized by the SFPD and gang injunctions that protect Lennar, not families. These racist gang injunctions need to be stopped, and the SFPD needs to be held accountable.

Luciano has brought a wonderful selection of Huichol beadwork, yarn paintings and jewelry just in time for the gift giving season! You will find beautiful beaded deer, coyotes, turtles, frogs and jaguars. As well as colorful yarn paintings full of the spiritual symbolism of the Huichol.

The Huichol Indians live in remote areas of the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico. They live sustainably and traditionally, the way all of us lived in the not too distant past. Each year for the past 10 years, Luciano has made the long journey of over a week to Gathering Tribes to share the beauty of his culture with us.

All proceeds from the sale of the art goes directly to Luciano.

This year, Luciano has brought Don Jacinto along for the journey. Don Jacinto is a traditional healer who will be conducting healing sessions at Gathering Tribes during the show. The sessions are first come, first serve.

Brutal Government Attacks on Community of Cutumay Camones Continue

On November 22, the community of Cutumay Camones was again brutally attacked by the Salvadoran riot police (UMO). The community, in their continuous resistance to the construction of a garbage dump, blocked the entrance of the construction site. Orlando Mena, Santa Ana's mayor, joined with Police Director Rodrigo Avila in sending more than 300 riot police to "dissolve the protest", attacking the community with tear gas fired from surrounding helicopters.

The attack on the community likely caused the death of 14-year old William Alfredo Ventura who died from bronchitis and pneumonia complications provoked by the tear gas. At the same time, 39 people, including children under the age of 18, have been arrested and are under police custody. The community is demanding the immediate release of all community members captured last week and continues to demand an end to the construction of the garbage damp as well the end of police intervention on behalf of the private company Presys.

Given that the death of Ventura cold have been directly related to the use of tear gas, Human Rights Ombudsman Oscar Luna called for an investigation into his death. "We are questioning the police abusive use of force, for which there must be an investigation into the actions of the National Civilian Police," said Ombudsman Luna. Social organizations that make up the Forum for the Defense and Sustainability of Water are joining in the demand that the death of Ventura to be investigated. They are calling for solidarity with the community against the repressive acts of the National Civilian Police. Also, the Legislative Assembly called for Police Director Rodrigo Avila to visit the Assembly on Wednesday November 28 to explain the police procedure implemented in Cutumay Camones.

Previously, social organizations such as the Water Workers Union SETA organized an activity to accompany the community in their resistance against the building of the garbage dump which will contaminate local water resources. Various communities in resistance gathered at the event to show their support. The case is similar to that of the community of Tacuba where community leaders were targets of state repression for defending the administration of water earlier this year.

Right-wing parties such as the PCN recently voted in favor of a resolution in the Legislative Assembly which includes a series of recommendations on the Cutumay Camones case. First, the resolution demands that the General Attorney's office investigate the series of irregularities in the concession of construction and operating permits that the Environmental Ministry awarded the private company Presys. Second, it asks the National Civilian Police to stop intervention in the community, saying that a national security entity cannot serve the interests of a private company, nor should it be applying excessive force. Lastly, the resolution calls for the suspension of the garbage dump.

We as a community have a plan on how to address violence at the root and we need your help to get people informed, come share ideas and strategies how to implement a real plan on solving violence in the hood.

"Resist To Exist" is a short doc, which illustrates how the Cucapa, an
indigenous people from the community of El Mayor, Baja California,
struggle to survive after the Colorado River disappeared and after the
Mexican govt. has taken away their right to fish in the sea. A fishing
community by tradition for the thousands of years, the Cucapa now face a
life without water or food. However, their decision to continue as a
people, heirs of an ancient culture, has led them to find various avenues
to defend their rights. The Other Campaign and the Sixth Delegation of the
EZLN, have committed themselves to this struggle in defense of the life,
the culture and the nature of the Cucapa and Kiliwa people with the
establishment of an encampment on indigenous, Baja Californian territory
(from feb. to april 2007).

[Jul 12] Protest Gang Injunctions

Racial Profiling = Gang Injunctions

at 9:30 am!! Stop the Gang Injunctions!

The Mission District and allies are protesting the proposed Gang Injunctions against the Nortenos, Eddy Rock, Chopper City and Knock Out Posse gangs.

These gang injunctions will:

1. Make it easier to criminalize youth
2. Exclude those under the injunction from their communities
3. Make it easier to prosecute alleged "gang members" by making "gang signs" a crime, wearing certain colors a crime, associating with other folks under injunctions a crime, and much more
4. Legalizes Racial Profiling against Blacks, Latinos, and other People of Color

The mission district feels that gang injunctions are an extension of gentrification because it is segregating more people of color out of their communities were they could receive services or interact with community organizations that can provide help to them.

We also feel that we have directly been pushed aside from any decision making in this process. Where is the jobs for youth? Where is the money for rehabilitation programs? Why haven't our children's schools been getting more funding?

Our communities should demand to be included in policies that will directly affect our families, friends, and communities.

Please come and support our press conference and let the Mayor Newsom and City Attorney Dennis Herrera that we don't want any gang injunctions, what we want is community involvement in solving our problems.

[Jul 6] "Fuck the Fourth" - Micro Film Festival

Estacion Libre and Collectiva Zapatista Ramona are collaborating on a micro film festival to build community, stimulate dialogue, and encourage creative resistance. We will be screening a series of shorts ranging from old government films, Zapatista footage, animations, queer and feminist films.

We are raising funds for a delegation of people of color with the purpose of building the anti-authoritarian, liberation movement.

The film fest will run through the summer and be held on the first Friday of July, August and September... each Friday will have a different theme so be sure to`come to all of them.

The first film screening called is Fuck the Fourth and we will be showing a series of patriotic shorts.
