[May 27] STOP THE RAIDS AND DEPORTATIONS!

On May 2, 63 immigrant workers from El Balazo Taquerias were raided and detained by ICE. Yesterday, 17 people were rounded up at their homes by ICE in San Rafael. Enough is enough!

Please join immigrant rights groups, Labor, faith-based groups and many others for a press conference and rally to denounce the Bay Area raids, and to support the taqueria workers on the day of their court hearing!

[May 23] Crisis at the Border (San Rafael)

Members of a recent delegation to the US-Mexico border will give a photo and film presentation focusing on the most recent forms of exploitation of undocumented immigrants at mafia-controlled crossing points and privately owned prisons.

The report will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 9 Ross Valley Drive at Fourth Street, San Rafael, on Friday, May 23, at 7:30 PM and is sponsored by the Task Force on the Americas.

A $5-10 donation is requested. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

En este programa, miembros de sociedades binacionales, estudiantes, y
otros de familias y comunidades ubicadas en ambos lados de la frontera
relatarán sus proyectos para enriquecer y sostener comunidades sin
barreras. Invitamos a la comunidad a compartir sus experiencias e
ideas para sostener estos lazos hacia la próxima generación. Beatriz
Leyva-Cutler, director ejecutivo de BAHIA, moderará la discusión.

Algunos proyectos que serán presentados:

-un libro bilingüe para niños, escrito e ilustrado por tres jóvenes
Chicanas de Oakland, inspirado por su niñezes en dos comunidades y por
algunos viajes a sus pueblos natales de México. (Patricia Sánchez,
Tomasa Dueñas Contreras, Tomasa Dueñas Tovar, Montserrat Becerra)

-un programa inovador de verano que busca conectar jóvenes
mexicoamericanos de Napa, California con jóvenes de Los Haro,
Zacatecas, y la comunidad de orígen de sus familias en México. (Participantes será
arreglado.)

-una biblioteca y centro comunitario para los niños en San Martin
Tilcajete, Oaxaca, organizado por una pareja de Oakland, uno de ellos
nació y fue criado en San Martin Tilcajete. (Lamberto Roque-Hernandez
y Alice Wagner)

-códices hechos por estudiantes de escuelas de arte locales para
ilustrar sus propias historias de la diáspora y de la identidad. (Celia Herrera
Rodriguez y estudiantes)

Este será un programa bilingüe, con traducción disponible. Las visitas
a la exposición estarán abiertas al público a partir de la 1:00 p.m., y
disponibles en español, antes del programa.

Admission to the museum is free all day!

In this program, people from binational associations, students, and
others involved in families and communities that stretch across the border
will share projects designed to strengthen and sustain trans-border
communities. We invite you to come and share your ideas about the
challenges and possibilities for sustaining these ties into the next
generation. Beatriz Leyva-Cutler, executive director of BAHIA, will
moderate the discussion.

Projects to be presented include:

-a bilingual children's book, written and illustrated by three Chican
teens from Oakland, inspired by visits to their home communities in
Mexico and their own bicultural experience. (Patricia Sánchez, Tomasa Dueñas
Contreras, Tomasa Dueñas Tovar, Montserrat Becerra)

-an innovative cross-border summer program that connects teens from
Napa, CA with teens in Los Haro, Zacatecas, their families' community of
origin in Mexico. (participants to be arranged)

-a library and community center for the children of San Martin
Tilcajete, Oaxaca, organized by an Oakland-based couple, one of whom was born and
raised in San Martin Tilcajete. (Lamberto Roque-Hernandez & Alice Wagner)

-codices made by local art students to illustrate their own stories of
diaspora and identity (Celia Herrera Rodriguez & students)

This will be a bilingual program, with translation provided. Bilingual
tours of “Enrique Chagoya: Borderlandia” will be available before the
program, starting at 1 p.m.
