Alberto CortŽs's extraordinary film, Heart of Time, is a rare and intimate look into the heart of the Zapatista revolution in Chiapas, Mexico. Cortes crafts a unique approach to storytelling-a confident mix of romantic drama, Greek chorus, and political intrigue-to relate a multifaceted tale of an epic liberation struggle that spans centuries, from the age of slavery to today's era of digital media. As CortŽs depicts, with striking authenticity, a community that is constantly reinventing the rules of tradition and revolution, he also reveals that the roots of struggle for political freedom are ultimately born out of the tangle of desires to live with a free heart. Featuring Roc’o Barrios.

Hosted by the Chiapas Support Committee

Victor Hugo López, Communications Coordinator at the Fray Bartolomé de las Casas Human Rights Center (Frayba) in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, will discuss human rights in Chiapas and the prospects for political change in 2010. The human rights situation in Chiapas has deteriorated rapidly in recent months, including an attack on a Fraba lawyer in September. As popular organizations wage peaceful struggles against paramilitary violence, tourism projects that displace campesinos, and illegal land grabs, the Frayba is at the often-dangerous forefront of human rights defense. Under attack from paramilitary groups, the army, and both the state and federal governments, the Frayba produces frequent human rights reports, defends cases in court and supports indigenous communities under attack.

Reclaim Public Education @ Kroeber Hall

START DATE: Tuesday January 19
TIME: 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM

Location Details:
Kroeber Hall is on the South East end of the University of Berkeley Campus. College Ave. and Bancroft intersect and about twenty yards to the left is Kroeber.

Growing activism in California campuses is a necessary response to budget cuts and fee hikes. Last fall UCBerekely students joined forces with with staff and faculty with a series of walkouts and occupations. Now the holiday break has not cured the disease of capitalism--the only thing we can do is continue the efforts of direct action. Kroeber Hall was site to last semester's library takeover spanning 24hours, which successfully brought to light proposed closers of open hours of the campus's dozen libraries. Now students and community is invited to participate in a takeover of the hall with displays and art, music and speakers. A panel discussion is planned, info table and the assorted other things we see at activist's convergences (ie: food!) But this does not exclude you from bringing something to share or present etc. The action will take place over 3 day's time so if it seems slow one hour--the next might be a memory you'll never forget.
And this tiny action is to aid in the the massive March 4th statewide walkout. Now that's entertainment!
