THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY IS CLOSE TO VICTORY.

ChevronTexaco is currently a defendant in an historic trial in Ecuador for having deliberately dumped 18.5 billion gallons of toxic waste directly into the rainforest, threatening the survival of indigenous peoples and leaving behind what is likely the worst oil-related disaster on the planet. The crude oil contained in Texaco's contamination is more than 30 times greater than the entire volume of crude spilt in the Exxon Valdez disaster.

Filed on behalf of 30,000 indigenous and campesino people from the Ecuadorian Amazon, the lawsuit (Aguinda v. ChevronTexaco) has the potential to set a precedent that could benefit millions of persons worldwide victimized by human rights abuses committed by private companies. The case implicates important issues of globalization, indigenous rights, and corporate responsibility.

Support communities from at home and abroad, including the Philippines, Iraq, Richmond, and Ecuador, in holding Chevron accountable for human and environmental rights abuses that exact a toll on their lives, land, and culture.

[Apr 25] ¡Vicente Fox, No eres Bienvenido!

[English version below]

Vicente Fox: You're Not Welcome!
March in downtown San Diego.
April 25 2007 at 6:00 pm
Vicente Fox, former president of Mexico, responsible for the massacres of indigenous people in Chiapas, for the disappearances of participants in the struggle in Oaxaca and for negligence in the case of the murdered women in Juarez and Chihuahua, is coming to San Diego on April 25th to receive the "Award for Democracy and Peace", given by the Americas Institute, a right-wing organization that is located on the UC San Diego campus.

We in the coalition vAPPOroaxaca believe that giving this award to Fox is a grave insult to all people who have been affected by the gross violations of human rights committed by the his administration. As a response, we are making a call to action to the community of San Diego to participate in the march "Fox, you are NOT welcome!" that will start at 6 pm in front of the Benito Juarez statue in Pantoja Park (on G Street in between Kettner and State streets) and end in Horton Plaza in front of the US Grant hotel where Fox will receive his award. Also, there will be a bike blocthat will start at the fountain in Balboa Park at 5 pm and meet up with the march. There will be a planning meeting for the march at noon on Saturday, April 21, during the Chicano Park day festivities.

If you have any questions, please send an email to vappor-oaxaca@riseup.net.

[Apr 19] Dismanteling Monoculture: Tale of Ants and Economics in the Americas

An evening with the Beehive Collective

The Beehive Collective is a political graphics workshop based in Maine, known for creating accessible, powerful imagery to explain important issues of our time in an easily digestible manner. Since 2001, the Bees have been working on a trilogy of posters on corporate globalization. Parts one and two dealt with the proposed FTAA trade agreement and Plan Colombia, the catchall name for U.S. military and corporate intervention in that South American country. The third poster will focus on PLAN PUEBLA-PANAMA (PPP), a mega-infrastructure development project for southern Mexico and Central America designed to facilitate corporate exploitation of the region, paving the way for the Free Trade Area of the Americas.

With three giant illustrated portable murals, a six foot tall fabric storybook “slideshow”, and an engaging narrative (available in Spanish or English), the Bees will take us on an interactive VISUAL tour of the connections between COLONIZATION, MILITARIZATION, and RESOURCE EXTRACTION in the Americas. Join us they deconstruct the complex and overwhelming issues that are shaping our world, using bioregionally accurate depictions of animals and insects as metaphors to link cultural and ecological diversity.
