[Feb 18] Campamento Rebelde meeting

Colectivo Campamento Rebelde is a collective effort to plan for the upcoming California Resistance Camp in the Cucapa community of El Mayor, in Baja California.

This week's Colectivo Campamento Rebelde meeting will take place this Sun. Feb 18th, from 3pm to 5pm, at Librería Coyoacan, 1435 Fruitvale Ave, Oakland CA 94601, near the Fruitvale BART Station.

This is an open meeting. We invite all people interested in participating in the Baja California Resistance Camp. We will be discussing the planned fundraisers for the camp and community projects in El Mayor, efforts to spread the word locally, organizing delegations to attend the camp (end of Feb to mid-May), and any new ideas that come up.

[Feb 21] La Otra en la Mission

(spanish below)

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007, 6:00-7:30PM
At Dolores Street Community Services-938 Valencia St.

(Between 21st and 20th Street)

We invite Mission residents and those who work in the Mission to create a space for those "below and to the left" and also those inspired by Zapatismo and the Other Campaign in Mexico.

Our intention is to create a consistent space for adherents and sympathizers to the 6th Declaration to support each other's political projects and build trusting relationships with one another. We want to support local struggles, network, share resources and spread Zapatismo in
the Mission.

We have no desire to build an organization or an "umbrella group," so we ask that those attending come as individuals-not as representatives of their organizations.

We are a loose group of San Franciscans who are involved with the Other Campaign in various capacities. We are involved locally in education, media, housing, the arts, intimate relationship violence, immigration, labor, and poverty struggles. Some of us attended the late November Northern California Encuentro last year held in Oakland and are inspired to continue the conversations that came from that gathering in a more local context.

We hope that those interested in attending will give thought to the following themes:

  • What are you working on/interested in working on in the Mission?
  • How do you see the ideas around Zapatismo being created in Mission?
  • What are your struggles in the Mission?
  • What motivates you to work/struggle in the Mission?
  • What do you want support on?

We believe that through creating a consistent space in San Francisco to reflect and support one another, we can help build vibrant movements against all forms of oppression. Join us on Wednesday February 21st at 6:00 PM and bring your ideas and energy for this group. This gathering will be interpreted consecutively in English and Spanish.

We also suggest familiarizing yourselves with the 6th Declaration if you haven't already: http://www.ezln.org/documentos/2005/sexta1.en.htm

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Feb 22] US Social Forum Bay Area Information Session

Another World is Possible!
United States Social Forum Bay Area Information Session

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007 - 6:30-9:00 PM
SEIU UHCW Hall
560-20th St. (Thomas Berkeley Way) b/t Telegraph & San Pablo, Oakland

The US Social Forum (USSF), scheduled for June 27-July 1, 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia, will bring together progressive groups, left organizations, grassroots organizations and social movements from across the US and the world. The USSF aims to create a space to share analysis and lessons, to build relationships, to develop leadership and consciousness, and to clarify vision and strategy.

This year's forum is the first to take place in the United States, following seven years of the World Social Forum (WSF) and many regional and local forums. The USSF is the result of years of exchange and relationship building with social movements in the global south. These movements have called on organizers and activists in the US to step up our work confronting neo-liberalism and the impacts of US policies at home and around the world. In the last couple years we have seen significant movements take the stage in the US fighting against the war in Iraq, against racist immigration policy, and the abandonment of the people of the Gulf South. This is a moment where we can put our heads and our hearts together and take the work to another level.

Join us at this information session to learn about Bay Area efforts to build towards the US Social Forum as well as how you can support members and leaders of Bay Area grassroots organizations getting to and participating in the US Social Forum.

$5-$10 donation requested, no one turned away for lack of funds.
This event is wheelchair accessible.

Sponsored by:
Grassroots for Global Justice, Just Cause Oakland, Movement Generation, National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, People Organized to Demand Environmental and Economic Rights (PODER), People Organized to Win Employment Rights (POWER), St. Peter's Housing Committee, The Center for Political Education & SOUL

Sunday, February 18 @ 7pm
Holla Back Presents: A Night of Third World Poetry

As part of the Bandung Spirit series, EastSide Cultural Center presents the first annual Third World Book Fair, a two-day event that presents the publications, politics and visions of enlightened Third World writers. The book fair features a Saturday evening dialogue between the internationally acclaimed authors Amiri Baraka and Ngugi wa Thiong'o. They will discuss the role of dissident art and literature under an increasingly repressive climate within the U.S. and throughout the western-dominated Third World. It is a special meeting of two visionary and revolutionary minds who have both risked their well-being as the price for truth-telling, and subsequently have had their works either banned or made scarce in the mainstream literary market.

Baraka will first read excerpts from his recently released collection of short stories, Tales of the Out & the Gone, and Ngugi, the masterful Kenyan writer-in-exile, from his latest novel, Wizard of the Crow. Both books have drawn rave press reviews across the nation and beyond.

Sunday evening will present an array of local Third World poets, including surprise literary guests with new publications. Book vending will primarily take place between 12 noon and 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday, with both evening events beginning at 7pm. Saturday night's door charge is $10, and Sunday's is $5. The Book Fair is free to the public during the day hours, and some vendors will be selling during evening events.
